Bird Watching

We have a resident heron and a few pelicans who hang out on our dock. You can watch them from the deck. Sometimes they watch you! And occasionally an osprey does a fly by while looking for a meal. If you're a little more serious 'birder' here are a few sites to check out, www.alabamacoastalbirdingtrail.com and floridabirdingtrail.com

The Annual Alabama Coastal Bird Fest is timed to coincide with the annual fall migration of many birds from North America to Central and South America. There is something for all birders from beginners to experts! Click on the following link for more information: www.alabamacoastalbirdfest.com or call (251) 990-0420

Restaurants

We're rather strange, we actually love to cook while on vacation down here because of the huge array of fresh fish and southern ingredients that we can't get back home. Consequently, we don't tend to go out very often even though there are tons of restaurants with excellent reputations close by.

The exception to that rule is The Original Point Restaurant, (850) 492-3577, a local legend, specializing in mullet (the local fish) and offering the best smoked tuna dip I've ever had. The homemade gumbo, crab bisque, fresh Apalachicola oysters, and steamed royal red shrimp rock too! Go on Friday or Saturday night when 'Bubba and Them' usually play live blue–grass music. Tons of fun and just about a mile east of the house so you can easily walk off that piece of key lime pie on the way home.

The Shrimp Basket is also a fun spot with good food, friendly service and inexpensive prices. Check out their daily specials, http://shrimpbasket.com/, 14600 Perdido Key Dr, Pensacola, FL 32507, (850) 492-1970.

And the Fisherman's Corner, a local hang-out, where you can sit on the screened in porch and have wonderful local seafood cooked fresh. It's under the Theo Barr's Bridge, take a right after the Circle K just before the rise up to the bridge.Fisherman's Corner 13486 Perdido Key Dr, Pensacola, FL 32507, (850) 492-5574.

Mojo's Coffee, our neighborhood 'starbucks' with free wi-fi hook up. On the north east corner of the intersection right before the bridge. 13430 Gulf Beach Hwy, Pensacola, FL (850) 497-0202
